How To Choose The Best Fig Tree for Your Space
The mature fig tree can reach 15-30 feet in height. Space the trees a little further apart to appreciate the unique shape. Many varieties are small enough to fit into large containers. You can choose from mid-, late- and early-fruiting varieties to increase your harvest from early summer through early fall. Some fiddle fig plants can produce fruit early in the season. This is called a "breba", or secondary crop.
Where to plant Fig Trees
Fig trees love the full sun and the warmth of buildings and walls. If you live in colder areas, consider cold-hardy varieties like 'Desert King’ and 'Brown Turkey'. You can also grow other varieties that are less cold-hardy and store them in large pots.

How to Care For Fig Trees
Once established, figs are very easy to care for and can withstand drought. As plants get established, it is important to water them regularly and mulch. To encourage root growth, it is also a good idea to prune young trees. They do not require much pruning after the first two to three years. Trees that are too dry will need to be watered occasionally.
Although they don't care too much about the soil they use, fig-trees prefer a well-drained loamy soil rich in organic matter. A layer of compost around your trees each year can help to provide the right nutrients and organic matter for your fig tree's growth.
